On Thursday, December 5th, 2024, Elena’s Light hosted a captivating and inspiring evening at Yale University’s Dwight Hall. The Lighting the Future event showcased Dr. Homeira Qaderi and Julia Abratańska, two extraordinary women whose experiences in war zones have shaped their paths and perspectives. Sharing powerful stories of resilience, activism, and the relentless pursuit of justice, they offered a deep dive into the challenges faced by women in conflict-stricken regions.
Speaker Highlights
Dr. Qaderi and Abratańska captivated audiences with their candid reflections on war and the unyielding human spirit.
Dr. Qaderi, a renowned Afghan author and lecturer at Yale, drew upon her personal experiences to shed light on the extraordinary resilience of Afghan women. As the founder of the Golden Needle Literacy Association, Dr. Qaderi has devoted her life to advancing women’s rights and education in Afghanistan. During her address, she passionately called for the end of gender apartheid in her home country, emphasizing that the definition of a “good woman” must be redefined. “We have to let women live freely, to pursue their paths, and not be held back by outdated norms,” Dr. Qaderi asserted, leaving the audience with a call to action that echoed long after the event.
Abratańska, a Polish humanitarian aid worker and co-founder of Renegade Relief Runners, shared her experiences working in Ukraine during the ongoing conflict. Abratańska spoke about the importance of mental fortitude, stating, “Don’t let them tell you no or that you can’t. There are many moments when I’m told something can’t be done, but I’m persistent.” Her words resonated deeply with the audience, inspiring them to embrace persistence and strength, especially when the obstacles ahead seem insurmountable.
A Bright Future Ahead
As the evening concluded, attendees left with a renewed sense of hope and empowerment. The event reminded us of the strength and resilience we embody. Please Save the Date for our Award Ceremony in April 2025!
